Dear Hans:
It was a delightful meeting we had last Sunday in New York. The agreeableness of everybody present helped to get things into action, and especially your words that the standards of the Organization should be very high and that our pursuit as restorers should be to honor the old masters and bring their instruments into the condition that they originally were. Leo Aschauer always reminded us students to preserve the instruments as the original maker had intended them to be, which was the essence of your statements too. This brings us to a question I personally have and maybe one that should be dealt with at the Ethics Committee.
2. Does one re-graduate and change the graduation pattern of master instruments? The reason I'm asking is that it is alleged that many establishments of note practice re-graduation. My question is, Is it ethically right or wrong, or what are the guidelines? Another question which should be dealt with at the Ethics Committee is the following: Do we as professional people pay commissions [kickbacks], finders fees or any other remuneration in money or kind to any third party for helping us in the sale of instruments and bows? And if so, what are the reasonable percentages to be paid?

3. Since these questions may be of interest to those who desire to be examined for Journeyman and Master, it would be well to come to grips with answers to these proper questions anyone may have who is familiar with the trade.

4. In regards to the invitation for Karl Roy and Eckart Richter to give a discourse at one of our meetings, I shall send you the proper address and channel by which these invitations can be extended after I have written them.

5. Thanking you for your fine work and time you spend in behalf of the American Federation of Violin Makers which is benefiting all of us, I remain,

Fritz Reuter,
Secretary - A.F.V.B.M.
